The House of the Lords of Kunštát is one of the two well-preserved Renaissance sights in the historical core of Brno. A major repair of the building started at the end of 1990. Due to the lack of financial means it was interrupted after two years. In 2000 the Brno municipal government decided to share the reconstruction costs from its funds and make use of the building in the future. The reconstruction was completed in November 2002 and since 2003, the House of Arts has been re-establishing its exhibition activities - spacious exhibition grounds are being fixed up in the first floor. Marek Pokorný has been appointed the curator of the Kunštát House on external basis. On the ground floor there is a bookstore, a small café and a multi-purpose lecture hall for about 80 visitors. A permanent exposition devoted to Leoš Janáček will be opened in the ground floor in 2004. The loft will be leased out to the Music Department of the Moravian Municipal Museum in Brno for offices, a reading hall and archive.
The Kunštát House reconstruction project has also offered new space in the underground of the building. It will be used for presenting video installations. Part of the Brno artistically minded public still remembers concerts and theatre productions that used to take place in the courtyard of the Kunštát House. Various local cultural institutions will participate in organizing similar events in the future. Thus the Renaissance Kunštát House will reappear as an important cultural and representative centre in the historical core of Brno. |
