It all started on 17th of january, one month ago.
A man took a machine and plugged it into a switch full of cables.
Who that man was is not important.
He will be gone, but art is alive.
I mean, let's keep fame out of this.
In 1990s there was a number of free art servers ran by independent
organisations, say Digital City in Amsterdam, Internationale Stadt
in Berlin, silverserver in Vienna, etc, strangely, many of them
went commercial and got privatised finally for various reasons
(budget cuts, frustration from precarious unpaid work, admins
converting into conventional middle class, boredom with life, etc),
expecting artists in 2000s to be rich enough to pay the hosting rent
themselves. Huh :) Yet, we know a number of survivors, and there is
new generation of the free servers coming to life in recent years,
like Servus in Austria, Ljudmila in Ljubljana, Node9 in Prague,
Okno in Brussels, etc.
The reason to start a new art community server is not only
economical. Server is intended for interaction and collaboration with
others (eg. on the Multiplace festival), as a streaming channel,
as a storage space for sound, image, video and other material,
and organisations and individuals are welcome to host their artistic,
social, cultural projects, related to ideas of Multiplace*.
Current capacity of hard disk drives is 1.4 TB, which pretty much allows
us not to set max capacity per domain for now. (Open source) software
currently installed on the server includes PHP 5, Apache 2, MySQL 5,
SquirrelMail 1.4, Mailman 2.1, phpMyAdmin 2, icecast2 streaming server
(ogg: vorbis/theora/flac), and soon Webmin will be launched for easy
administration of subdomains, emails and lists.
Server is run by Multiplace NGO, which takes care (among other things)
for covering the costs for the hardware, server administration
and serverhousing.
For everyone who is not sure what we talk about here is the pic
of the server: http://www.flickr.com/photos/21063587@N05/2124618859/
(server is computer like every other computer, usually better equipped
than the personal one, and with higher bandwidth, storing web domains
for public access)
